Artist Statement: In Unit 1, I created an abstract tile. The surface of the tile is decorates with many different shapes and patterns. Other shapes and lines are also carved into the surface. In this unit, I learned about slab and coil hand building techniques, which are applied into my tile. The elements of design I incorporated in were the forms of the coils and slabs, and the shapes carved into the slabs. I did not use an artist for inspiration, instead I used my imagination as my own inspiration. My tile is non-representational, which means the shapes and forms do represent any recognizable object. Even so, the tile still has a purpose. The purpose of my tile is to remind me of the nature. The abstract forms make me think of the mountains, water, and even leaves blowing in the wind. In comparison, the draft drawing and the final tile look very different. While working, I changes several parts along the way. I am happy with these changes, because I think they make a more interesting final piece.
