Artist Statement
My expressive artwork is a relief sculpture made on a cardboard base. On the base are many two-dimensional or three-dimensional objects that together form the shape of a wave. The materials are both geometric and organic, and some of them include bottle caps, wire, and cardboard shapes. Through my artwork, I was trying to express the importance of water and how it should be cared for. I love all water and water-related activities, such as swimming and diving, so this sculpture is special to me. It is a decorative piece, and while there is no specific function, I think it acts as a messenger to speak about caring for our earth. This is why the art is composed of many recycled materials and 'waste' objects, such as plastic wrappers and packing peanuts. Looking at this sculpture, I think it was successful in being able to identify what it is. The abstract ways I used cardboard and wire resemble a wave in a unique way. When I think about the building process, I think I could have used more types of recycled materials, to create a larger variety in the art. But I enjoy the final product and had fun creating it.
