Artist Statement: For this unit, I created two clay boxes that are vessels. I made one large box and one small box in order to have a variety of sizes. Each box has a different pattern and position of the shapes on each side. These vessels are geometric and use line and shape as elements of design. As inspiration, I used the stained glass window patterns from the Avery Coonley Playhouse, which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. I love the geometric shapes and bright primary colors that Wright used to make the glass windows stand out. While creating my artwork, I intended for it to have a cheerful aesthetic. When Wright created the designs for his windows, he drew inspiration from colorful balloons and flags. I wanted my art to be bright and happy, yet simple, and I think I achieved that by using geometric shapes and forms. The initial function for these boxes was to hold jewelry, but they can also hold other small objects. I think having two different sizes creates harmony between the boxes. I am proud of how the vessels turned out and the contrast between the circle slabs and the lines carved into the surface. Those lines could have been neater and I could have scraped more clay bits off the edges of the lines. Overall, this project turned out well and I am happy with the results.
